Mormon Church announces formal opposition to Gay Marriage Ruling in CA
So, in solidarity with my Mormon antecedents, I present Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie (AKA "House") discussing how the perfectly decent word "Gay" has been ruthlessly hijacked from our beloved English language.
So much for 'the church' staying out of politics. I was afraid of this after Hinkley's death. Can you imagine how much more it'd been if Romney had won the Republican nomination....shudder!
I think attitudes have changed considerably since 2000, when the last Mormon-supported referendum was passed in CA. I suspect that there will be at least some, and perhaps significant pushback from the CA members (or so I can dream.) This may have the paradoxical effect of forcing the Church to liberalize at a rate faster than the current Gerontocracy would prefer.
How ironic. My wife and I watched the entire run of "A Bit of Fry and Laurie" only a few weeks ago. Fine stuff, this one included.
The optimist in me is hoping that you're right, and that there will be more resistance to these homosexual discrimination laws. I think that there a slow evolution is occurring in the Church community, similar to the slow change about blacks in the sixties and seventies, which will eventually lead to a more enlightened position of the leadership.
